What Exactly Is Fat Transfer?

Are you looking for a way to reduce your acne scars?

If you are living with facial scars caused by cystic acne or an injury you may find yourself embarrassed by your appearance. Here in Glendora, CA, our dermatologist Dr. Sidhu and his team at Foothill Dermatology Medical Center want to provide you with the treatment you need to not only improve your appearance but to also help you feel more confident. This is why we offer fat transfers to treat scars.

How does the fat transfer work?

Sometimes referred to as autologous fat transplantation, fat transfer is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing fat from the abdomen, thighs or buttocks and injecting it into the depressed areas of the skin to fill them out and reduce indentations while also improving the natural contours of the face.

What goes into the fat transfer process?

When you come into our office for this cosmetic treatment, we will first decide what area of the body we are going to remove the fat tissue from. Fat is removed through tumescent liposuction, which is safe and far less invasive than traditional liposuction because we use microcannulas to remove the fat.

Once the fat cells are removed, they are prepped for injection. Often, the same tool used to remove the fat (aka: the microcannula) is also used to transfer fat cells into the targeted areas. Since fat is removed from the patient’s body, this reduces the risk for any side effects. The entire procedure typically takes about one hour, and you can go home immediately after.

Will I see results immediately?

Yes, you will see immediate results with fat transfer; however, this procedure also stimulates the production of collagen, which can improve skin elasticity over time. Therefore, you will continue to notice improvements in your skin over the next few months after this procedure. Along with less visible facial scars, you may also notice a more refreshed and youthful appearance. You may even notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

Is fat transfer right for me?

If you are dealing with facial scars due to injury or acne, then you may be an ideal candidate for this treatment. In some cases, patients may try Botox or chemical peels in conjunction with fat transfer in order to achieve significant results. This is something that we would be happy to discuss with you during your consultation.
