Treating Your Eczema
If you suffer from eczema, you know how frustrating, uncomfortable and persistent this form of dermatitis can be. Characterized by lingering red, itchy, scaly patches, eczema is a visible and frustrating medical condition that can affect your confidence, comfort and skin health.
Children, teens and adults can all be affected by eczema, which some grow out of and others struggle with for decades. At Foothill Dermatology Medical Center in Glendora and Rancho Cucamonga, CA, we can help you identify the cause of your eczema and assist in finding an effective treatment.
Eczema can be caused by environmental allergens, such as soaps, perfumes, pollen or smoke, or food allergies to items like dairy, eggs or soy. Eczema may also flare up in dry, cold weather.
Lifestyle changes or home remedies may be effective in relieving itching or treating your eczema. Things to try at home include:
- Keeping baths short, and use warm instead of hot water
- Apply moisturizer soon after bathing or showering
- Use an unscented moisturizer daily, focusing on dry spots. Lotions designed for those with eczema and containing skin-calming ingredients like aloe and oatmeal can be found at drugstores
- Avoid clothing made from coarse or irritating fabrics
- Use mild, unscented soaps
- Keep a humidifier in your bedroom if conditions are dry or cold
- Eliminate foods that trigger flare-ups
- Launder clothes, towels and bedding in unscented detergents or those formulated for sensitive skin
Prescription treatments may be recommended if your eczema doesn't respond to at-home remedies. Topical corticosteroid ointments, applied directly to the site, can prove effective in calming eczema. Corticosteroids are also available in pill or injection form, but these versions are not for prolonged use.
Your provider may also prescribe antibiotics, antifungal medications, or antihistamines.
